Opinion piece for ABC online - Preventable deaths of people with intellectual disability
10 Feb 2017
On 9 February, the Acting Ombudsman, Professor John McMillan, and the Community and Disability Services Commissioner/ Deputy Ombudsman, Steve Kinmond, wrote an opinion piece for ABC Online, calling for concerted action in NSW and nationally to address the preventable deaths of people with intellectual disability.
We submitted the opinion piece in response to the findings of a recent landmark study by UNSW, which found potentially avoidable deaths among adults with intellectual disability at over twice the rate of the general population. Our reports to Parliament on the deaths of people with disability in residential care over the past 15 years have consistently highlighted the disparity and disadvantage they face in relation to health care and outcomes. It’s time that we closed the gap.
