The NSW Child Death Review Team (CDRT) works to prevent and reduce the deaths of children aged from birth to 17 years. To do this, we maintain a register of child deaths occurring in NSW and analyse information about these deaths to identify any patterns or trends.

This submission provides: an overview of deaths of infants, drawn from the NSW Child Death Register; issues for consideration by the Inquiry, based on our recent work relating to vaccine preventable infectious disease, Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy, and abuse and neglect-related deaths of infants.

This submission draws from our review work and information we have previously put forward in public reports. It is focused on the key issues that we believe warrant consideration by the Committee as part of its examination of current approaches aimed at preventing youth suicide in NSW.

The Report of reviewable deaths 2014 and 2015 considers the ‘reviewable’ deaths of 54 children that occurred in NSW in those two years. The deaths were reviewable because the child died in circumstances of abuse or neglect, or in suspicious circumstances, or the child was in care at the time of their death.

This report is provided to the NSW Ombudsman in response to a request for a literature review with a focus on fatal neglect definitions and reporting, and advice relating to the NSW Ombudsman’s defining and reporting of fatal child neglect in NSW.

This report concerns 504 children whose deaths were registered in NSW in 2015. The rate of child deaths in 2015 – 29.61 deaths per 100,000 children. This is the lowest annual rate recorded by the Child Death Review Team since the team was established in 1996.

This report was commissioned by the New South Wales Child Death Review Team (CDRT) to describe child deaths in NSW from diseases for which a vaccine is currently available in Australia, over the period 2005 to 2014; and provide recommendations to improve prevention of child deaths due to vaccine-preventable diseases.

Drawing on the Team’s work over many years in relation to swimming pool drowning deaths, this submission raises a number of factors that represent increased drowning risks to children and points to prevention strategies.

This report concerns 485 children whose deaths were registered in NSW in 2014. The rate of child deaths in 2014 – 28.41 deaths per 100,000 children – is the second lowest annual report since 2000, and continues the significant decline in infant and child mortality rates over the last 15 years.
